Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 19, 2026
English Word Reminder ("the app") is a free app with optional in-app purchases, made by Emirhan Çelik ("we", "us", "our"). This policy explains what information the app handles, what leaves your device, and who receives it.
The short version
- Your vocabulary cards, categories, study progress and settings live on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud account. We do not have access to them.
- The app has no account or sign-in, and we do not sell your data.
- The app sends usage statistics to Google Firebase Analytics, and sends the words you type when adding a card to public dictionary websites to fetch definitions. Both are explained below.
Information the app handles
Stored on your device and in your iCloud
Cards, categories, review history, notification history, streaks and preferences are stored on your device using Apple's SwiftData. If iCloud is available, the same data is synced through your private iCloud (CloudKit) database so it appears on your other devices. This data is governed by your Apple and iCloud settings; it is not sent to us.
Usage statistics (Firebase Analytics)
We use Google's Firebase Analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve it. The app records events such as: session length; a card being added (only the length of the word and the name of its category, not the word itself); study sessions (category name, number of cards, how many were rated Forgot, Hard, Good or Easy, duration and streak length); vocabulary packs installed or purchased; and the choices you make during onboarding (language, level, daily goal and exam goals).
Firebase also receives technical information automatically, such as device model, operating system and app version, language, time zone, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. This data is associated with identifiers that Firebase generates or reads for the app installation (such as a random app-instance ID and Apple's identifier for vendors), not with your name or an account.
Category names are text that you type yourself, so please avoid putting personal information in them. Google's handling of this data is described in Google's Firebase privacy information.
Dictionary lookups
When you add a vocabulary card, the app looks the word up online to fill in definitions, pronunciation and examples. The text you typed (which can be a partial word while you are still typing) is sent, together with your IP address, to public dictionary websites: Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Learner's Dictionaries, WordReference and WordHippo. Each of these sites has its own privacy policy. No account information is sent.
Pack downloads
The app downloads its catalogue of vocabulary packs from Google Cloud Firestore. This is a read-only request and sends no personal data beyond what any network request reveals, such as your IP address.
Purchases
Purchases are processed by Apple. We receive no payment or card information. The app asks Apple which purchases you own so that it can unlock them.
Notifications
Reminders are scheduled locally on your device using the notification permission you granted. They are not sent through our servers.
Sharing
We do not sell personal information. Information reaches only the providers described above: Google (Firebase Analytics and Firestore), the dictionary websites, and Apple (iCloud and purchases).
Security and retention
Analytics data is retained by Google under Firebase's standard retention settings. Data on your device stays there until you delete it or the app; iCloud data can be managed in your device's iCloud settings. No method of transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your choices
- You can decline notifications, and you can switch off iCloud for the app in your device settings.
- The app does not currently offer an in-app switch for analytics. If you have questions about your data, contact us below.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed.
